Use Dashboard Context in AI Assistant
Experimental Feature
Dashboard context in AI Assistant is an experimental feature. It is in active development and its behavior may change in future releases.
Dashboard context helps AI Assistant understand what you are currently viewing. When you use the Assistant from a dashboard, it can use the active dashboard, applied filters, or a selected visualization as additional context for your questions.
For example, when a dashboard is filtered to a specific region and period, you can ask why revenue changed without repeating the filter values in your prompt.
Context adds information to the Assistant. It does not restrict the Assistant to the selected dashboard or visualization.
Use the Active Dashboard as Context
When you open AI Assistant from a dashboard, the Assistant receives the following context:
- the active dashboard
- the dashboard title
- the current dashboard filter values
The context is applied when you send a message. If you change a dashboard filter while the chat is open, the updated filter state is used for subsequent messages.
A context indicator in the chat panel shows the active dashboard. Applied filter values are included in the context but are not listed separately in the indicator.
If you have dashboards open in multiple browser tabs, the Assistant uses the dashboard from the tab where you opened the chat.
Example: Ask About Filtered Dashboard Data
The dashboard is filtered to Europe and the first quarter. The user asks:
Why is revenue down?
AI Assistant uses the active dashboard and filter values as additional context when preparing the answer.
Manage the Active Context
You can clear the injected context when you want to ask a broader, workspace-level question.
Clearing the context does not remove earlier messages or answers from the conversation. You can add the dashboard context again when you want to return to questions about the current dashboard.
When you navigate to another dashboard, the active context updates to the new dashboard.
Ask About a Specific Visualization
You can open AI Assistant from a data-bearing dashboard visualization and add that visualization to the context. The visualization context can include:
- the visualization name
- its metrics
- the visualization type
- the currently displayed data slice
The context indicator shows the visualization that is currently in scope. If the visualization contains multiple metrics, the Assistant can identify which metrics it uses in the answer.
The context action is not available for dashboard widgets that do not contain data, such as text or image widgets.
If the chat already uses different context, AI Assistant prompts you to replace the current context or start a new conversation.
Example: Ask About a Visualization
The user opens AI Assistant from a visualization showing Gross Profit Margin by customer segment and asks:
Which segments are driving the decline?
AI Assistant uses the selected visualization and its current data slice as additional context.
Permissions and Data Access
Dashboard and visualization context follows the current user’s existing permissions and data access. Adding context does not give AI Assistant access to data that the user cannot access.
Current Limitations
The following limitations apply while the feature is experimental:
- Context from Analytical Designer is not supported.
- AI Assistant does not automatically track which visualizations are currently visible on the screen. Add a specific visualization to the context manually.
- Drill interactions and drill paths are not added to the context.
- Context cannot be relayed between an embedded dashboard and a separately embedded AI Assistant.
- The context indicator shows the active dashboard or visualization but does not list individual dashboard filter values.
